General Office Information

I usually make appointments between 9 am and 3 PM Monday through Friday except Wednesdays. The best way to reach me is to call my office at 619-741-5366. Most of the time scheduling a day or two in advance is sufficient; sometimes I have same day appointments available. We accept checks, cash, Visa, MasterCard and Discover.

Euthanasia Procedure

When I come to your home, I will meet your pet and let them have a couple minutes to adjust to me being there, so they can relax a little, hopefully. I will have you sign a consent form, and then give a sedative/pain killer injection in your pet’s muscle. Within a couple of minutes, any pain or discomfort your pet is feeling should subside and he/she should drift into a very deep sleep, usually within 5 minutes. When your pet is completely asleep, I will give the second injection which is an overdose of an anesthetic agent which will cause the heart and breathing to decrease until they stop and your pet will pass away. That also takes about 5 minutes. The entire appointment generally lasts between 30 and 45 minutes. Charges vary depending on your zip code and whether you need me to help with the aftercare.

Aftercare Options

Some people choose to bury their pet. If this is your choice, make sure you bury away from any wells and the grave should be at least 4 feet deep, so another animal doesn’t dig him or her up. Some people prefer to handle planning the cremation on their own by contacting a pet crematorium. The crematorium can pick up from your home or you can take your pet there. Or I can make arrangements for the aftercare, if you desire. After your pet passes away, I would gently wrap him or her in a blanket or sheet for privacy and transport them back to my office where the cremation company will pick them up. I offer a budget friendly "Care of Remains" and two types of cremation, communal or private. A communal cremation means your pet is cremated with other pets and the ashes are scattered by the cremation company. A private cremation means your pet is cremated by himself/herself and you get the ashes back. For medium to large dogs I have a gurney and, if possible, having someone to help me with the transfer would be helpful. Charges vary depending on the weight of your pet and the form of aftercare you choose: a private or communal cremation or "Care of Remains".

New: I now offer a budget friendly "Care of Remains". I will take your pet with me after the appointment and make arrangements with the cremation company for the aftercare. Your pet will still be treated with the same dignity as for a cremation, however the process costs less than a cremation. No ashes will be returned.

Hospice Consultation

A hospice consultation is generally about 45 minutes long. I will meet you and your pet for discussion of quality of life, end of life, my euthanasia protocol and palliative care including pain management. A brief physical examination of your pet is performed and medications may be prescribed, if indicated. Fees vary depending on location and whether any medications are dispensed.

Fees

Fees for home euthanasia vary depending on the zip code where the euthanasia will be performed.
